TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Gateway to the Peruvian Amazon

Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, our team will warmly welcome you and transfer you to the Monte Amazónico Lodge office for check-in and orientation.
Then, we’ll head to the Port of Capitanía to board a motorized canoe for an exciting one-hour river journey along the Madre de Dios River, surrounded by breathtaking jungle scenery.

At the lodge, enjoy a refreshing tropical juice made from local Amazon fruits during your welcome briefing, followed by check-in to your comfortable jungle cabin.

After a delicious Amazonian lunch, we’ll cross the river to visit the Monkey Island (Isla de los Monos), home to several playful species such as capuchin and squirrel monkeys. Observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat before returning to the lodge.

As night falls, we’ll embark on an Amazon Night Safari in search of white caimans resting along the sandbanks of the Madre de Dios River. With a flashlight in hand, you may also spot the capybara, the world’s largest rodent—sometimes weighing up to 60 kg!
Return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the rainforest.

After a delicious breakfast, we begin a 3 km hike deep into the dense tropical rainforest on our way to the magnificent Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most biodiverse lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve.
Known as the natural habitat of piranhas, this pristine lake is home to an extraordinary variety of Amazon wildlife. As we glide peacefully across the mirror-like waters on a canoe ride, you’ll spot incredible species of birds and monkeys, including the hoatzin (shansho), cormorants, jacanas, herons, vultures, howler monkeys (cotomonos), squirrel monkeys, black capuchins (machín negro), tamarins (pichicos), and even sloths resting in the trees.

If we’re lucky, we may encounter a family of giant otters, reaching up to two meters long, an endangered species that thrives only in the most protected areas of the Amazon. You might also witness massive black caimans, some exceeding four meters in length, silently gliding through the waters — an unforgettable sight.

We’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch, made with fresh local ingredients.
As night falls, we embark on a nocturnal jungle walk to discover the incredible diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures that come to life after sunset.
Dinner will be served at the lodge, followed by a relaxing rest surrounded by the natural symphony of the rainforest.

Wake up early at 5:30 a.m. for a magical start to the day with a short jungle hike to the Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge system that rises over 30 meters high above the rainforest floor. From the top, you’ll experience a breathtaking panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and the surrounding Amazon canopy — the perfect spot to observe colorful tropical birds such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas. Watching the sunrise over the jungle from this height is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After breakfast, get ready for an adrenaline-filled canopy adventure! With the guidance of a professional instructor, you’ll learn how to use your safety harness and gear for an exciting Amazon zipline experience that lets you glide through the treetops like a bird, feeling the rush of the wind and the energy of the rainforest below.

Return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious Amazon-style lunch, prepared with fresh local ingredients.

In the afternoon, take part in traditional fishing along the Madre de Dios River, where with a bit of patience, you might catch native fish such as catfish and piranhas.

Later, continue your adventure with a kayaking challenge across the Madre de Dios River. Paddle through the calm waters surrounded by pristine jungle landscapes and witness a spectacular Amazon sunset — a perfect way to end your day immersed in the natural beauty of Tambopata.

After enjoying your final Amazonian breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the incredible Tambopata rainforest.
We’ll board our boat back to Puerto Maldonado, navigating once again along the beautiful Madre de Dios River while taking in the last views of the lush jungle and its vibrant wildlife.

Upon arrival, our team will transfer you safely to the airport or bus station, depending on your travel plans.
Take with you unforgettable memories of your Tambopata Amazon adventure, the wildlife you encountered, and the peaceful moments surrounded by the magic of the Peruvian jungle.
