TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado & River Lodge Welcome

On Day 1 of your journey, we’ll receive you at either the airport or the bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado, where your Amazon rainforest adventure officially begins. You’ll be transferred to our local office at Monte Amazónico to complete check-in and registration. Then, the real immersion starts: we board a boat at the Capitanía port and navigate the majestic Madre de Dios River for about one hour, arriving at our jungle lodge deep in Tambopata’s lush rainforest habitat.

Upon arrival, enjoy a refreshing welcome drink made from the freshest Amazon fruits of the region, and settle into your tropical room at the lodge. After lunch, prepare for an afternoon excursion to the famous Monkey Island, located opposite our lodge across the Madre de Dios River — here you’ll encounter capuchin monkeys, monk monkeys, and other playful primate species thriving in their natural habitat. We return to the lodge for a brief rest.

As night falls, your Amazon adventure continues: join a night river safari in search of white caimans basking on sandy riverbanks of the Madre de Dios, and keep an eye out for capybaras—the world’s largest rodent—emerging at dusk. Be sure to bring a flashlight for this thrilling nocturnal wildlife experience! After dinner, you’ll have time to unwind, reflect on the day’s discoveries and rest in the calming sounds of the rainforest.

After breakfast, your Tambopata Amazon adventure continues with a thrilling 3 km (1.8 mi) guided trek through the heart of the dense tropical rainforest. Our destination: the breathtaking Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most biodiverse lakes within the Tambopata National Reserve, home to fascinating wildlife — including the legendary piranhas.

Once we reach the lake, we’ll board a peaceful wooden canoe and paddle through calm waters surrounded by towering palms and rich jungle vegetation. As we glide across Lake Sandoval, you’ll have the chance to spot an incredible variety of wildlife such as hoatzins (known locally as shansho), cormorants, jacanas, herons, vultures, squirrel monkeys (mono fraile), black capuchins (machín negro), tamarins (pichicos), and even sloths resting in the treetops.

If you’re lucky, you might witness one of the Amazon’s rarest sights — the giant river otter, a species nearly two meters long and critically endangered. Keep your eyes open, too, for the largest black caimans, which can grow to over four meters (13 ft) in length. After this unforgettable wildlife experience, we’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch prepared with local ingredients.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue the adventure by walking along the Canopy Walkway, an elevated bridge system rising nearly 30 meters (98 ft) above the forest floor. This incredible network allows visitors to appreciate the Amazon from a completely new perspective — from the treetops! From the canopy platforms, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Madre de Dios River and the endless green expanse of the jungle. Don’t forget your camera — it’s the perfect spot for observing colorful bird species such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas.

After dinner, we’ll embark on a night walk through the rainforest to discover the hidden world of nocturnal creatures. This guided hike reveals the incredible diversity of the Amazon after dark — from vibrant frogs and curious insects to mysterious reptiles and amphibians. The sounds and sights of the jungle at night make for an unforgettable and truly immersive experience.

Return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest surrounded by the soothing chorus of the rainforest.

At 5:30 a.m., we begin our final morning in the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve with a magical sunrise walk along the Canopy Walkway — a suspended bridge system rising over 30 meters (98 ft) above the rainforest floor. From this incredible height, you’ll experience the Amazon awakening beneath you: the soft morning mist over the trees, the golden light breaking through the canopy, and the first calls of exotic birds echoing across the jungle.

From the observation platforms, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Madre de Dios River and the endless expanse of the rainforest. This is the perfect moment for birdwatching — you may spot vibrant toucans, colorful macaws, dazzling tanagers, and graceful oropendolas beginning their morning flights. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that perfectly captures the magic of the Peruvian Amazon at dawn.

After this spectacular encounter with nature, we return to the lodge for a hearty Amazonian breakfast. Then, it’s time to say goodbye to this unforgettable paradise. We’ll transfer you back to Puerto Maldonado, either to the airport or the bus terminal, depending on your travel plans.

Your Tambopata jungle adventure may come to an end, but the memories of its wildlife, sounds, and colors will stay with you forever.
