Your expedition begins with a scenic drive from Cusco to the cloud forest, where misty mountains give way to lush vegetation. Enjoy guided nature walks through this vibrant ecosystem, spotting colorful orchids, playful monkeys, and a variety of tropical bird species.
As evening falls, relax at our comfortable Rainforest Lodge, surrounded by the magic of the jungle. The adventure continues with a 5-hour boat ride along the river to Lodge, a hidden gem deep in the Amazon. Along the way, unwind at natural hot springs before arriving at this incredible jungle retreat.
At Ecological Reserve, explore an Observation Tower that rises above the treetops, offering panoramic views of macaws, toucans, and tanagers. At night, set out on a guided night walk in search of fascinating creatures like tarantulas, exotic frogs, rare insects, and snakes that come alive under the jungle’s darkness.
Your journey then takes you further into the heart of Manu’s Reserve Zone, where you will stay at the authentic Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, run by local indigenous families. Here, the primary rainforest reveals its wonders as you explore Cocha Salvador and Cocha Otorongo lakes—prime habitats for giant river otters, caimans, jaguars, and several species of monkeys. Marvel at the diversity of the Amazon, from towering trees and medicinal plants to flocks of parrots and other exotic birds.
On the return, enjoy a unique stay at a camouflaged jungle house near Bonanza Lodge, offering an immersive experience in harmony with nature. Finally, retrace your path by boat and bus back to vibrant Cusco, carrying memories of an adventure unlike any other.

Unleash your spirit of adventure and join us on this 6-day Manu Park Reserve Zone Tour—an extraordinary journey through the hidden treasures of the Peruvian Amazon that will stay with you forever.
We begin our Manu National Park Reserve Tour early in the morning, departing from Cusco in a comfortable tourist bus. Our journey ascends toward the Andean highlands of Paucartambo, a traditional town rich in history and culture. Along the way, we make a fascinating stop at the funerary towers of Ninamarca (Chullpas), an important archaeological site from pre-Inca times.
From there, we descend through the mysterious cloud forest of Peru, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. This lush environment is home to exotic orchids, heliconias, and giant ferns that thrive in the misty climate. Here you will have the chance to spot the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana)—the national bird of Peru—performing its incredible mating ritual.
This unique habitat also provides opportunities to observe swallow-tailed birds (Trogon sp.), colorful butterflies, and if we are lucky, the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the only native bear species in South America. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will be amazed by the rich diversity of species that inhabit this area.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the port of Atalaya, where we board a motorized canoe for a 30-minute journey down the river. Our destination is Paititi Lodge, a cozy eco-lodge surrounded by pristine rainforest. Here you will spend the night in comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and showers, enjoying the sounds of the Amazon under the starlit sky.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the lodge, we continue our adventure with a scenic boat journey along the Alto Madre de Dios River, one of the main gateways into the Peruvian Amazon. As we travel deeper into the jungle, the riverbanks come alive with an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
Throughout the journey, you will have the chance to observe herons, kingfishers, vultures, and the most spectacular of all—the majestic King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa), often called the “jungle condor.” With some luck, we may also spot the most iconic predator of South America: the elusive Jaguar (Panthera onca) resting or prowling along the river’s edge.
We make a brief stop in the small town of Boca Manu, a remote jungle settlement where travelers can stretch their legs and experience local life. As the trip continues, the sheer abundance of wildlife makes it clear why Manu National Park is considered one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. On the riverbanks, it is common to see groups of turtles, white caimans (Caiman crocodilus), or even the world’s largest rodent, the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris).
In the afternoon, we arrive at Cocha Otorongo, a protected oxbow lake located deep inside the Manu Reserve Zone. Here we settle into our jungle camp, built on raised platforms with roofs to ensure comfort while staying immersed in nature. The camp offers showers and toilets, making it a perfect balance between adventure and comfort.
Highlights of Day 2:
Scenic boat journey on the Alto Madre de Dios River
Wildlife spotting: kingfishers, herons, vultures, turtles, caimans, capybaras, and possibly jaguars
Stop at the town of Boca Manu
Arrival at Cocha Otorongo, one of the most iconic lakes in Manu Reserve Zone
Overnight in jungle camp with platforms, roofs, showers, and toilets
Today we set out to explore Cocha Salvador, located just 30 minutes from Cocha Otorongo, deep in the Manu Reserve Zone. This pristine oxbow lake is one of the best places in the Amazon for wildlife observation.
Here, we embark on a peaceful ride aboard a catamaran raft, paddling silently across the lake’s still waters. This unique vantage point allows us to spot the endangered giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), one of Manu’s most iconic species. These playful and social animals are often seen fishing and swimming in family groups.
As we glide along the lake, we also encounter a wide variety of exotic bird species, including the colorful Purple Gallinule (Porphyrula martinica) and the rare and elegant Agami Heron (Agamia agami), often called the “jewel of the rainforest.”
Later, we return to land and walk along the main rainforest trails accompanied by our naturalist guide. During this educational hike, we learn about the ecosystem, medicinal plants, giant trees, and the intricate balance of life in the tropical forest.
In the afternoon, we head back to our jungle camp at Cocha Otorongo, where you will spend another night in comfortable raised-platform accommodations with roofs, showers, and toilets available. For those who wish, there is an optional night walk, providing another chance to encounter nocturnal species such as frogs, insects, and other mysterious creatures of the Amazon.
Highlights of Day 3:
Explore Cocha Salvador oxbow lake in the Manu Reserve Zone
Catamaran ride for observing giant river otters, one of the Amazon’s rarest species
Birdwatching opportunities: Purple Gallinule, Agami Heron, and more
Guided walk on rainforest trails to learn about Amazon ecology and plants
Overnight stay at Cocha Otorongo camp with optional night walk
We wake up to the unmistakable calls of the howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus) echoing through the jungle canopy—a natural alarm clock of the Amazon. After breakfast, it is time to begin our return journey toward Boca Manu, retracing our path along the river.
For travelers who prefer a quicker exit, there is an optional return flight by small plane from Boca Manu back to Cusco, offering spectacular aerial views of the rainforest. The rest of the group remains in Boca Manu, where we spend the night at a comfortable lodge.
The lodge provides basic but welcoming accommodations with private rooms, showers, and toilets, allowing you to rest after several days deep in the jungle. For those who still wish to explore, an optional night walk around the lodge is available, giving another chance to observe nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, and other creatures that come alive after sunset.
Today we continue our return journey by boat along the river, heading back to our Amazon lodge. As we navigate the waters, there are still plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, with chances to spot herons, kingfishers, vultures, parrots, and many other exotic species that thrive along the riverbanks of Manu National Park.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the lodge, where you will spend the night in comfortable rooms with showers and toilets available. Surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, this final stay offers the perfect balance of comfort and immersion in nature before concluding our adventure.
Highlights of Day 5:
Scenic boat ride through the Amazon rainforest
Birdwatching opportunities along the Alto Madre de Dios River
Overnight stay at a well-equipped Manu Amazon lodge with private facilities
On our final day, we begin the return journey from Manu National Park to Cusco. We travel by boat back to the Atalaya river port and watchtower, where our vehicle awaits us. From here, we transfer to a comfortable tourist bus that will take us across the breathtaking landscapes of the Andean cloud forest.
Along the way, we enjoy the last opportunities to observe the incredible flora and fauna of the cloud forest, including orchids, heliconias, ferns, butterflies, and the vibrant birdlife that makes this ecosystem so unique. With some luck, you may even catch sight of monkeys or the elusive Spectacled Bear as we ascend back toward the Andes.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the city of Cusco, where our unforgettable 6-day Manu Reserve Zone Tour comes to an end.
Highlights of Day 6:

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Manu National Park Tour
🌳 National Park vs. Biosphere Reserve
The Manu National Park is a government-protected area in Peru, created to conserve intact ecosystems for research, education, ecotourism, and recreation. The Manu Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO, includes the National Park, a buffer zone, and a transition zone, with the aim of promoting conservation, sustainable development, and environmental education.
⛺ Camping Sites and Jungle Lodges
In the Manu River sector, travelers stay in comfortable eco-lodges and camping sites built with local materials. Facilities often include dining areas, showers, toilets, and trails connecting the lodges. Mosquito nets are provided to ensure a safe and comfortable sleep. Lodge amenities may vary, so always confirm with your tour operator.
💧 Drinking Water in Manu
Your tour operator provides safe drinking water during the trip. Some bring bottled water from nearby towns, while others boil, filter, or purify river and creek water. Always check with your guide for details.
🚶 Physical Condition Requirements
There are no strict fitness requirements, but being able to walk several kilometers on forest trails will enhance your overall Amazon experience.
🦟 Are There Mosquitoes?
Yes, like any Amazon region, mosquitoes are present. Bring insect repellent, long-sleeved shirts, and long trousers for protection.
💉 Tropical Diseases in Manu
Cases of yellow fever, malaria, and leishmaniasis have been reported in southern Peru, but no tourists in Manu have contracted these diseases. Consult your doctor, follow vaccination recommendations, and take preventive measures before your trip.
🚌 Manu Park Accessibility
The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is the dry season (April–November). The rainy season (February–March) can make road and air access difficult, and trails may flood.
👥 Encountering Native Communities
Tourists cannot visit indigenous communities inside Manu. While contact with isolated nomadic groups is rare, if it happens, avoid interaction and report immediately to park authorities.
🧴 Biodegradable Products
Help protect the fragile ecosystem by bringing biodegradable soap and shampoo.
🌡️ Climate in Manu and the Amazon
The climate varies by altitude. During May and June, cold fronts called “friaje” may cause temperatures to drop sharply. Bring warm clothing during this time, especially for evenings.
🚫 Swimming in Rivers and Lakes
For safety reasons, swimming is not allowed in Manu’s lakes and rivers.
🚶 Walking on Jungle Trails
Always stay with your guide and follow marked trails for safety.
🎣 Fishing Restrictions

☀️ Climate and Weather Conditions
Manu is known for variable weather, with high rainfall and temperature shifts depending on altitude. The dry season (May–September) brings less rain and cooler temperatures.
💊 Malaria & Vaccinations
The risk of malaria in Manu is extremely low (less than 0.1%). It’s generally recommended to rely on repellent and protective clothing instead of heavy prophylaxis. If necessary, basic medications are available in Peru. Practice good hygiene, drink only bottled or boiled water, and avoid raw foods.
🍵 Travel Health Tips
Stay hydrated, avoid eating from street food stalls, and rest when arriving at higher altitudes. Drinking coca tea (mate de coca) helps with altitude adjustment. In the jungle, avoid drinking untreated tap water.
