TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01: Cusco | Piscacucho Km 82 – Huayllabamba

Pick up from the hotels starts at 05:00 a.m. approx. We will arrive at Ollantaytambo around 06:30 am with 40 minutes for breakfast and souvenir shopping. Then, we will go to Piscacucho or Kilometer 82, where the Classic Inca Trail begins (breakfast is not included). At around 09:30 am, we will arrive at Kilometer 82, the first checkpoint of the Inca Trail, ready to show your entrance tickets, passports, and (if applicable) your student card.
At the beginning of the trail (2720 m / 8923 ft), we will cross the Vilcanota River and follow its route. The first day is relatively easy, a warm-up along the flat Inca terrain. There are excellent views of the Inca fortress ‘Huillca Raccay’, the vast and incredible Inca site of Llactapata (officially called ‘Patallacta’), and the beautiful snow-capped peak of ‘Wakay Willca’ (5860 m / 19225 ft), known as Veronica. Our first camp is in Huayllabamba (3000 m / 9842 ft), a temperate green valley. Night temperatures are around 5ºC depending on the month.

After waking up around 5:30 a.m. and enjoying a hot breakfast, we will begin a steep ascent to the highest pass, Abra de Warmiwañusca or ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ at 4215 m / 13829 ft. After a well-deserved rest, we will begin our descent to Pacaymayo where we will stop for lunch (3600m / 11811 ft).
On our way to the pass, we will see a variety of hummingbirds and other bird species, and appreciate the incredible variety of native plants and trees. After lunch, we will begin the second steep two-hour climb to Runkurakay Pass (3750 m / 12,303 ft). We arrive at our campsite at 5 pm. Temperatures at this camp are 4ºC during the night.

This is the most impressive day! After breakfast at 6:00 am, we will start the day with a gentle climb to visit the archaeological site of “Runkurakay” (meaning “ovoid site”). We will then pass through Sayacmarca (“Dominant Village”) and enjoy spectacular views of the mountains and canyons.
We will continue to the Inca site of “Phuyupatamarca” (“city in the clouds”) and descend 3000 stairs through the cloud forest to the impressive Inca agricultural site of Intipata. After visiting Intipata, we continue until we reach our third camp at Wiñayhuayna (2680 m / 8792 ft). Temperatures during the night are approximately 12ºC

Around 4:00 am, we wake up and start the final part of the trip, heading to Machu Picchu. We arrive at Intipunku (the Sun Gate) at 6:30 am, where the majestic Citadel of Machu Picchu awaits.
After a 40-minute walk downhill, we enter the citadel from the top through the “House of the Guardians” and proceed to the checkpoint. Your professional guide will then take you through the ruins, showing the main streets, plazas, and intricate stone stairs.
After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore the site on your own.
