We will travel deep into the Manu National Park, where you’ll have the chance to observe exotic Amazon wildlife, including the vibrant Cock-of-the-Rock (Peru’s national bird), the elusive Spectacled Bear, and many other species native to the Peruvian Amazon.
From Puerto de Atalaya, we navigate by motorized canoe down the Alto Madre de Dios River toward the beautiful Machuwasi Lake (Cocha Machuwasi) – an oxbow lake where we’ll spot a wide variety of Amazon birds, such as the Hoatzin (Shansho), Capybaras (Ronsocos), and other animals in their natural habitat.
One of the highlights of this Manu jungle tour is the early morning visit to the Amazon clay licks, where flocks of colorful parrots and macaws gather to feed on the mineral-rich soil – a spectacular and vibrant display of Amazonian wildlife.
Throughout the tour, you’ll learn about the Amazon flora and fauna, explore different ecosystems of Manu, and even embark on a night jungle walk to discover nocturnal animals like frogs, insects, and mammals that are rarely seen during the day.

We begin our Manu jungle adventure early in the morning with hotel pick-up in Cusco between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. in our comfortable private bus. On the way, we will visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient Inca funerary towers located at 3,750 meters above sea level.
Next, we make a short stop in the folkloric town of Paucartambo, famous for its colonial bridge, traditional festivals, and rich cultural heritage of Peru. The journey continues to the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m.a.s.l.), the official gateway to the Manu National Park, where the Andes meet the Amazon rainforest.
From here, we descend into the enchanting cloud forest, a magical ecosystem home to incredible biodiversity. Along the way, you’ll find orchids, heliconias, and ancient ferns. We’ll take a guided walk through the forest to observe the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana) – Peru’s national bird – performing its spectacular mating dance.
With some luck, we may also spot quetzals, trogons, and possibly the elusive spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), one of the rarest animals of the Peruvian Amazon.
In the afternoon, we arrive in the town of Pilcopata (550 m.a.s.l.), where we stay in a typical Amazon jungle lodge located outside the village. The lodge offers private rooms, bathrooms, and hot showers, ensuring a comfortable and authentic Amazon rainforest experience surrounded by nature.
After a delicious Amazonian breakfast, we continue our journey by private bus for approximately 45 minutes until reaching Atalaya Port (490 m.a.s.l.). From here, we board a motorized canoe and navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River for about 30 minutes to reach our accommodation at Paititi Lodge – a traditional Amazon jungle lodge with private bathrooms and showers, surrounded by the lush rainforest of Manu National Park.
During the boat ride, you will have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of Amazon wildlife, including colorful birds, playful monkeys, and other fascinating species of the Peruvian Amazon.
After enjoying a traditional Amazon lunch, in the afternoon we visit the beautiful Cocha Machuwasi (Machuwasi Lake). Here we embark on a handmade catamaran ride, perfect for wildlife watching. This oxbow lake is home to species such as the Hoatzin (Shansho), different types of monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, insects, and even capybaras (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris) – the largest rodents in the world.
As night falls, we offer an optional Amazon night walk to explore the jungle and discover nocturnal species active after dark, such as frogs, insects, and mammals. Overnight stay at Paititi Lodge, with all basic comforts, including private bathrooms and showers.
Very early in the morning, we board our motorized canoe to visit a parrot clay lick – a natural mineral-rich clay wall where 3 to 4 different species of green parrots gather in a spectacular show of color and sound. This incredible wildlife encounter is one of the highlights of any Amazon jungle tour in Peru.
Afterwards, we return by boat and begin a guided jungle hike through the primary forest. Immersed in the untouched Amazon rainforest, we trek until reaching the private lagoon known as Cocha Maravilla. From a dedicated observation platform, we will have the chance to spot a great diversity of Amazon birds, monkeys, small reptiles, dwarf caimans, and insects in their natural habitat.
In the afternoon, we return to the jungle lodge to enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch. As night falls, we offer an optional Amazon night walk, an unforgettable experience to observe the fascinating nocturnal wildlife of the Manu rainforest – including frogs, insects, and mammals.
Overnight stay at our Amazon lodge, equipped with private bathrooms and showers, ensuring a comfortable stay in the heart of the Manu jungle.
At dawn, we will sail to the parrot clay lick to watch these lively birds as they eat the nutrient-rich wall. Afterward, we will return for breakfast and a rest before setting out on trails to explore the diverse fauna and flora. This includes the tallest and thickest tree (ceiba), and potentially spot monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, capybaras or tapirs. To end the day, we will go on a night hike focusing on insects, amphibians, or snakes before staying overnight at the lodge.
After enjoying a final delicious Amazon rainforest breakfast, we begin our return journey. We board a motorized canoe from Paititi Lodge back to Atalaya Port, where our private bus will be waiting for us.
From there, we start the scenic drive back to Cusco, once again crossing the mysterious and enchanting cloud forest of Manu National Park. Along the way, we take in the last breathtaking views of the lush Amazon jungle landscapes.
Arrival in Cusco is scheduled between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., marking the end of this unforgettable 4-day Manu National Park tour in the Peruvian Amazon – a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with wildlife encounters, jungle adventures, and cultural discovery.
